The United Arab Emirates attracts employers and candidates from many countries. A candidate may have studied, worked and lived across several jurisdictions before taking a role in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or another emirate.
A suitable screening process should be based on the role, the candidate’s history, available sources and the organization’s lawful purpose. The same package should not automatically be applied to every applicant.
Confirm Identity and Name Variations
Review the candidate’s legal name, previous names, passport details, nationality and address history. Arabic and other names may have several valid English transliterations.
Verify Education and Attestation Requirements
Employers may verify the institution, qualification and attendance. Certain official uses may also require attestation or legalization, which is separate from verifying the underlying academic record.
Confirm Employment History
Former employers may provide different levels of detail. The legal employer, free-zone entity, agency or outsourcing company should be identified correctly.
Review Professional Licences
Healthcare, finance, education, engineering and other regulated roles may require confirmation with the relevant licensing or professional authority.
Consider Police Clearance Certificates
A UAE police clearance certificate is issued by the relevant police authority. Requirements, application methods and acceptance depend on purpose and authority. Overseas history may require certificates from other countries.
Use Court and Database Searches Carefully
Public and database access varies. Possible sanctions, PEP, court or media results require identity comparison and should not be treated as confirmed on name alone.
Protect Personal Data
The UAE has a federal personal-data protection framework. Employers should collect information for a defined purpose, restrict access, use appropriate safeguards and obtain legal guidance where necessary.
Plan for Cross-Border Data and Sources
Screening may involve institutions, employers and authorities outside the UAE. The organization should understand where data will be obtained, processed and stored.
Use a Proportionate Scope

A finance, regulated, senior or high-trust role may justify a broader review than a lower-risk position. Document the rationale for each check.
